Released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which is part of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the study found that workers with paid sick time may be 28 percent less likely to suffer work-related injuries, reports HealthDay News.
This study sheds new light on the link between occupational-related stress and injury. Researchers examined national survey data collected from 38,000 workers in the private sector between 2005 and 2008. They determined that instances of injury and job stress varied, but that workers in the construction, healthcare and manufacturing industries were more likely to sustain injury without sick time.
“Many workers may feel pressured to work while they are sick, out of fear of losing their income,” explained the study’s lead researcher, Abay Asfaw. “If fewer people work while they are sick, this could lead to safer operations and fewer injuries in the workplace.”
Just how many employees actually have access to paid sick leave? In 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 75 percent of full-time workers and 27 percent of part-timers were granted paid sick time. Comparatively, over 80 percent of full-time workers had access to vacation benefits.
According to the United States Department of Labor, companies are not required to provide paid sick leave. However, the Family and Medical Leave Act requires companies to grant up to 12 weeks worth of unpaid leave for situations including the birth of a child and care of an immediate family member as a result of serious illness. If an employee meets these and other conditions, companies are required to hold his or her position or offer another one with equivalent pay and benefits.
