Vitamin B slows down memory loss

Scientists at Oxford University have discovered that daily tablets of B vitamins can cut the amount of brain shrinkage in elderly patients by as much as half. It is the largest study ever conducted on the effects of B vitamins on cognitive ability, and one of the first to actually show positive results.

Roughly one in six elderly people have mild cognitive problems, including memory loss, that does not interfere with their daily lives. However, about half of those diagnosed will go on to develop Alzheimer’s within five years.

Scientists discovered that certain B vitamins like folic acid, B6 and B12 are known to help control levels of homocysteine, an amino acid found in the blood. High levels of homocysteine are often associated with Alzheimer’s.

The study showed that those taking vitamins regularly showed a slower brain shrinkage – about 0.76 percent a year versus 1.08 percent for those who did not take anything.

Those looking increase their B vitamin intake may want to consider taking dietary supplements like those offered by Dr. Newton’s Naturals.
