Tart cherry antioxidants may help athletes perform better

Research that was recently published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise suggests that the antioxidant compounds found in tart cherries may help decrease damage in overworked muscles.

Scientists at London South Bank University’s Sports and Exercise Science Research Center tested the effects of cherry juice concentrate on trained athletes.

Participants consumed the juice twice a day for two weeks and researchers found that the athletes recovered from intense workouts 5 percent faster than a control group, which can be a significant advantage when it comes to competitive sports.

Authors noted that antioxidants known as anthocyanins give the cherries their red color and also have anti-inflammatory benefits, which may prevent cardiovascular diseases and arthritis.

Results of the study suggest that athletes who add supplements containing cherry extracts to their training program may be successful in beating out the competition.
