Study: Omega-3 fatty acides can delay AMD in women

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of vision loss in older adults, but results of a recent study indicate there may be a way to stave of its progression. According to a report posted online, women who regularly consume fish and omega-3 fatty acids can significantly reduce the risk of developing the condition, Science Daily reports.

The study, which is set to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Archive of Ophthalmology, was conducted by William G. Christen. He and his colleagues collected data from more than 38,000 women who had not been diagnosed with AMC and studied their eating and dietary habits. They discovered that regular fish intake was associated with a 42 percent decreased risk.

“This lower risk appeared to be due primarily to consumption of canned tuna fish and dark-meat fish,” the study authors wrote.
