Purple fruits and green tea may stave off debilitating illnesses

Research that was published in the Archives of Toxicology suggests that compounds found in purple fruits – like blueberries, grapes and plums – and green tea may help arrest a process that leads to conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

Iron chelators found in the fruits and tea bind the chemical element in the body and stop it from producing toxins known as hydroxyl radicals, which have been known to cause degenerative diseases.

Authors of the study noted that all brightly-colored fruits and vegetables contain chelators, but that the kind contained in purple fruits tend to be the most effective at binding iron molecules.

Results of the study suggest that people may prevent serious neurological illnesses by eating more fruit and supplementing their diets with products that contain concentrated amounts of purple fruits.
