New study sheds light on the development of osteoarthritis

Around the world, more individuals are experiencing osteoarthritis. According to a recent survey by Statistik Austria, nearly 40 percent of people over the age of 60 experience the condition, yet a team of researchers at the University Department of Orthopaedics at the MedUni are trying to find ways to prevent it from forming.

“Glycobiology is largely unresearched in our specialty, so we at the MedUni Vienna are the first in the world to be doing this on a systematic level,” said lead author Stefan Tögel.

Tögel and his collaborators are attempting to establish a connection between glycobiology – which studies the significance of chains of sugar throughout the body and in cell development – and orthpaedic diseases like osteoarthrtitis.

“The more badly worn the cartilage of a joint is, the higher the production of galectins,” added Tögel. “Galectins set off degenerative and inflammatory processes in cartilage cells.”

The team at MedUni hope to use the research to transform treatment and prevention awareness techniques for orthopaedic ailments.
