Nearly half of older adults with vision impairments limit activities to prevent risk of falls

A study published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science has found that 40 to 50 percent of older adults with vision problems are less likely to engage in certain activities as a result of their fears of falling.

“I expected all of the groups to limit their activities due to a fear of falling but I was a bit surprised that the group with Fuchs corneal dystrophy was the most likely to limit their activities,” said Ellen E. Freeman, Ph.D., at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Montreal. “I was also surprised at how frequently people with eye disease reported limiting their activities due to fear of falling. ”

Freeman and her team conducted a cross-sectional study that featured 345 patients from Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal, Canada. Of the group, 93 participants were affected by age-related macular degeneration (AMD), while 57 experienced Fuchs corneal dystrophy and 98 had glaucoma. An additional group without vision disorders were also included in the study.

Researchers found that older participants with Fuchs were the most likely to limit activity due to a fear of falling, while those with glaucoma and AMD were equally inclined to rethink certain tasks due to apprehension.

Those who resisted doing activities were also more likely to be female, suffer from depression and have greater instances of morbidity, or fear of fatality.

One in three elderly adults over the age of 65 experience falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This can result in fractures, as well as fatal and nonfatal injuries.
