According to researched published in the journal Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association, regular intake of magnesium supplements may help individuals combat high blood pressure.
Authors hope that these findings will clarify previous studies that have shown inconsistent results with regard to magnesium’s relationship with blood pressure.
Researchers say that magnesium may play a role in relaxing blood vessels, which is a known method for relieving high blood pressure. When blood vessels are contracted, the heart has to work harder to circulate blood throughout the body, which raises pressure.
Scientists followed 60 men and women with high blood pressure, having them take magnesium supplements for eight weeks, followed by eight weeks without them. At the end of the research period, they found that changes in blood pressure averaged about 2.7 mm/Hg less while taking supplements than when not.
