Scientists at MIT, in conjunction with Tsinghua University in Beijing, have shown that increasing levels of magnesium in the brain through a dietary supplement, such as ActivMag from Dr. Newton’s Naturals, enhanced brainpower across the board, including learning abilities and short- and long-term memory.
Magnesium is an essential element found in dark green vegetables such as spinach. It is recommended that an individual ingest about 400 mg of magnesium a day or they may find themselves susceptible to allergies and heart disease, among others health concerns.
“We found that elevation of brain magnesium led to significant enhancement of spatial and associative memory in both young and aged rats,” said researcher Guosong Liu. “If [magnesium] is shown to be safe and effective in humans, these results may have a significant impact on public health.”
Liu went on to explain that half of the population of most industrialized countries are magnesium deficient. If they are able to bring those levels to normal or above the recommended amount, it may significantly slow the progression of the age-related loss of cognitive abilities.
