According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, male smokers who consume higher levels of magnesium appear to have a lower risk of cerebral infarction, or stroke, than those with relatively normal levels.
Recent studies have shown that a change in diet may help individuals who are at risk of stroke. Because hypertension is a major risk factor for these people, taking steps to lower blood pressure may be an effective means of preventing future strokes.
Scientists led by Susanna Larsson examined data from nearly 27,000 male smokers between the ages of 50 and 69 who had not previous suffered from strokes. After adjusting for variables, they found that the men who consumed the most magnesium were 15 percent less likely to have a stroke than those who had the least.
