People are used to hearing from their personal trainers and doctors that they would be better off shedding some pounds. But now from the dentist too? You better believe it.
A new study from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine has found that when the body has less fat cells, it is better equipped to fight gum disease. It is thought that this is because fat cells help trigger inflammation in the gums and when gums are not inflamed, the risk of gum disease is decreased.
Gum disease can be a very serious condition. “Inflammation that continues to brew in the body can have harmful effects over time, and inflammation from gum disease can erode bone and cause tooth loss,” the department chair at the school, Nabil Bissada explains. “It can also cause breaks in the gums where harmful oral bacteria can enter the blood stream…linked to preterm birth, fetal death, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.”
