Hospital stays may lead to malnutrition

Research that was recently published in the journal Nutrition & Dietetics suggests that individuals who experience long stays in the hospital – especially the elderly – are at risk for malnourishment.

Results of the study showed that about one-third of hospital patients were malnourished and as many as 70 percent of patients in residential care for the elderly were not receiving proper nutrition.

Authors noted that at one hospital in Australia, staff identified 15 percent of the patients as being malnourished. However, when lead author Karen Charlton analyzed the weight and appetite of the patients, she found that a staggering 90 percent of the facility’s patients were lacking in nutrients or were at risk for malnourishment.

Charlton said the under-nourished patients were at risk for developing ulcers and infections. On average, these patients spent six more days in the hospital than healthy patients.

Results of the study suggest that taking nutritional supplements – like those offered by Dr. Newton’s Naturals – before and during a hospital stay may ensure that you or your loved ones are properly nourished and are able to return home more quickly.

Gold Standard Protein from Dr. Newton’s Naturals is a powdered shake – featured in chocolate, vanilla and a combination of the two called royale – that contains strengthening protein and healthy fat in addition to essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids to promote proper nutrition.
