Healthy sleep habits and lessening of stress may promote weight loss

A new Kaiser Permanente study has found that individuals who wanted to lose 10 pounds or more were more likely to reach their goal if they received moderate amounts of sleep and lowered their overall stress levels.

Nearly 500 subjects were interviewed for the study, which measured how sleep, stress, internet and television time and depression affected weight loss prospects. Although these factors have been studied with regard to obesity in the past, there are relatively few studies that examine how they affect weight loss.

“Some people may just need to cut back on their schedules and get to bed earlier,” said lead author Charles Elder. “Others may find that exercise can reduce stress and help them sleep. For some people, mind/body techniques such as meditation also might be helpful.”
