Major depressive disorders, referred to as clinical depression, can be a devastating thing to overcome. While the source of depression can vary from chemical imbalances to environmental factors, new research suggests that the condition could also be related to vitamin D deficiency.
According to Science Daily, a recent study of three women diagnosed with severe clinical depression found that, with increased intake of vitamin D, the symptoms of depression began to decrease.
“Vitamin D may have an as-yet-unproven effect on mood, and its deficiency may exacerbate depression,” explained Sonal Pathak, MD. “If this association is confirmed, it may improve how we treat depression.”
Vitamin D serves a vital role in helping your body absorb and process calcium, which in turn aids in the strengthening of bones. The study, which was presented at The Endocrine Society’s 94th Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, occurred over an eight to 12-week period.
All three women who were selected continued taking antidepressant medication in order to ensure accurate results for the study. They also had similar pre-existing medical conditions. In addition to vitamin D deficiency and depression, the women, ages 42 to 66, were also being treated for Type 2 diabetes or hypothyroidism.
After receiving treatment, each woman reported changes in temperament.
