According to new research by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, chronic sleeplessness in older women may indicate future nursing home or assisted living center placement, reports Science Daily.

“Despite the growing literature on sleep disturbance and disability, prior to our research very little was known about the association between sleep disturbance in older adults and risk of placement in long-term care facilities,” said senior author Kristine Yaffe, M.D.

The study, which was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, sought to establish a link between fragmented sleep and nursing home institutionalization in older women.

Researchers examined sleep patterns in women over the age of 80. According to the source, unlike previous studies, observational sleep data was used to explore the connection between sleep disturbance and nursing home placement.

“Our results show that in community-dwelling older women, more fragmented sleep is associated with a greater risk of being placed in a nursing home or in a personal care home,” explained lead author Adam Spira, PhD.

Women who spent more time awake after falling asleep had three times the odds of winding up in a nursing home. In addition, those suffering from sleep deficiency may increase their risk of developing diabetes, depression and cardiovascular disease, reports the Centers for Disease Control.
