Being happy and healthy at home

A recent study on why people eat more nutritious meals at home found that those who were happy at home tended to avoid emotional eating and prepare healthier foods.

The study followed 160 women and recorded their emotional states before and after meals. All participants were white, English-speaking and non-obese, and a more varied study is necessary. However, the report by Dr. Ji Lu of Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Dr. Catherine Huet and Dr. Laurette Dubé of McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management, states that “the home is a privileged environment that nurtures healthy eating and in which healthier food choices trigger and are triggered by more positive emotions.”

Women who were happiest at home prepared healthier meals and felt more satisfied upon eating. Many of the healthy cooks reported feeling less stressed and far more content in the home.
